to be immersed by the blood. Certain oral drugs are manufactured for sublingual
or buccal administration to preclude their transformation in the stomach or
small intestines. Buccal drugs are prepared to be placed in the buccal for
absorption by the mucous membrane of the mouth. Sublingual medications are
calculated to dissolve fastly when placed under the tongue. For example,
erythrityl tetranitrate (an anti-anginal) can be affected one or the other
sublunary or buccally as prescribed, however isoproterenol hydrochloride (a
bronchodilator) and nitroglycerin (an anti-anginal) are specified sublingually,
and methyltesterone (an androgen) is given only buccally.
